Saturday 18th April was a gorgeous bright spring morning, slightly chilly with a brisk cold breeze.
Eight members of Andover Triathlon Club headed to Chieveley Village Hall, in Berkshire to take part in the Newbury Duathlon. It was low key but a very well organised event by Team Kennet, attended by 170 competitors of all ages and abilities. All equally enthusiastic.
The course consisted of a 5km mostly off road run around local fields and footpaths followed by a 25km cycle loop heading through Hermitage, Hampstead Norreys, Compton, East Iisley, Peasemore and back to Chieveley for the second transition and the second run following the same route as the first.
There was some deliberation as to what to wear, not wanting to get too hot or suffer from the cold we left it until the last possible moment to strip off and head to the start for the race briefing.
With the more keen competitors heading towards the front of the mass start and others staying in the centre of the medley out of the wind for warmth!
Following the race briefing, the start horn sounded and we set of for the first run, once round the Village Hall field clockwise through the car-park before a short road section then out to the fields.
On returning to the car-park the first time and into transition one, ditching our running shoes we collected our bikes and headed back to the road for the 25km cycle. After the hill and windy cycle it was back to the Village Hall for transition two, where we park the bikes and change back into running shoes and out for the second run, same course as before.
This time back at the hall we ran anti-clockwise round the field and through the finish to complete the Newbury Duathlon.
Dan Mason was first club member to finish, and sixth overall, with an impressive time of 01:23:07.2 followed in by Judit Leszkovich second lady with a time of 01:32:57.8. The rest of the club: Louisa Vere – 01:35:35.8, Rob Savill – 01:42:57.1, Peter Holt – 01:49:13.4, Lisa Hill – 01:55:46.9 and Jacqui Taylor having been unable to train due being run down, showed true grit and determination finishing in 02:02:44.7
Many thanks to our support team Tracey and Nev who also joined us for a celebratory meal after to conclude a great morning.
